Stories from Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi

• Navigators tells of the discovery of New Zealand by both Māori and European navigators
• Go-Betweens explores early interactions between Māori and Europeans
• Meeting Ground tells of major events that took place right here between 1833 and 1835
• Inside the Tent shows a film of a re-enactment of the signing of  the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840
• Documents Room explores the nine Treaty sheets and the 1835 Declaration of Independence
• Striving for Balance looks at both British and Māori reactions following the signing of the Treaty
• A Test of Strength shows a short film of NZ history and life from the 1860s to the present day
• The Place of Waitangi continues the ongoing story of Waitangi and its place in NZ today

We design learning experiences to fit the curriculum focus and age level of each group, whether they are pre-schoolers fascinated by the stories the taonga tell, to high school students conducting in-depth research for assignments. Students are inspired to critically engage with Waitangi, the place, with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and The Treaty of Waitangi, and with the history of Aotearoa / New Zealand as a nation. We love seeing students’ sense of curiosity, pride and belonging as they weave their own personal connections into the story of our nation.
