Kaikohe Students: Understanding Waitangi

September 21, 2023

Students had a sense of going back in time, signing a document in the same way some of the Māori chiefs signed the Treaty and imagining how they may have felt. They had great pride as they discovered information about their ancestors in the museum. Creating their own clay taonga by taking an impression from carvings around the waka was a fun hands-on activity. The cultural performance by our passionate performers, Te Pitowhenua, was another highlight of their visit. Accompanied by Michelle, the students sung a wonderful waiata in response. We love having our local schools and seeing them get excited about what happened right where we live! Mihi nui to teacher Bev and for sending the students’ letters.
