Newly formed Student Focus Group a great success

Students from 5 local schools recently spent a day with our Education Team taking part in all aspects of our programme. The purpose was to gather valuable student feedback and suggestions. There were some interesting and creative ideas and we look forward to incorporating some into our programmes.

Teachers regularly give feedback, but we wanted more student voice about what they enjoy and would like to see included. Our group consisted of students selected from Paihia School, Russell School, Kaikohe Christian School, Bay of Islands College and Kerikeri High School. Our programme included a tour through Te Kōngahu Museum and across the Grounds, hands-on activities and traditional Māori games, our Birth of a Nation film, Carvers’ Studio, latest Art Exhibition and the always popular Cultural Performance.

After lunch provided by our Cafe, students shared ideas. We were impressed with their positive attitudes and creative thinking. Some ideas include; mini-drama scripts of historical events that students can re-enact, a focus on our wonderful flora and traditional plant uses, workshops with the cultural performers, and museum quizzes. We will endeavour to design activities around some ideas where practical, and keep students informed. We aim to keep student voice going as a valuable part of our feedback, with regular Student Focus Group days.

A big thank you to all the schools, teachers, students and whānau that supported us in making this day a success.
