Hāngi & Concert

A true taste of Māori culture

Our Hāngi & Concert experience offers an exceptional evening of authentic Māori culture, including a captivating live performance followed by traditional hāngi dinner cooked in an earth oven, where you can sample Māori culture and cuisine at its best!

Whether you are staying in Paihia, Russell or Waitangi, this unique Bay of Islands dining experience is a ‘must do’ on your New Zealand itinerary, providing a delicious and captivating immersion into Māori culture.

Immerse yourself in Māori history, culture and cuisine

After a day of exploring Waitangi Treaty Grounds at your leisure, your evening begins at Whare Waka Café. Mix and mingle as you enjoy a complimentary drink and an introduction to the evening by your charismatic and informative host.

Soon after, you’ll witness the unveiling of the hāngi – a traditional Māori earth oven – in which your food is steamed to perfection. Our expert hāngi chefs will explain this ancient cooking technique as they reveal your feast.

But it’s not time to eat just yet – first you’ll journey back in time as your host accompanies you on a walk through the native bush. Experience the thrill of a challenge from a Māori warrior as you make your way through the grounds. If you pass, you’ll continue on to the iconic carved meeting house – Te Whare Rūnanga – where you’ll encounter a traditional Māori welcome, and an energetic cultural performance by our resident performing arts group, Te Pitowhenua, that will leave you spellbound.

After the show you’ll return to the café for a delicious, traditional hāngi dinner of meats, stuffing, vegetables, breads, salads and steamed pudding for dessert.

Our unique Hāngi and Concert experience is available throughout the summer months when the evenings are warm and inviting, from October to April.
