The on-site and hands-on learning experiences at the Treaty Grounds provide opportunities for students to critically engage with Waitangi, the place, with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and The Treaty of Waitangi, and with the history of Aotearoa / New Zealand as a nation. All visits are facilitated by our Education Team and trained Waitangi Treaty Grounds staff
Our Learning Experiences are developed by New Zealand registered teachers and link closely with the New Zealand Curriculum. All visits are carefully planned in conjunction with the visiting teachers. Activities can include:
- Mihi Whakatau (brief Māori welcome)
- Visit to Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi
- Guided tour of the grounds
- Cultural Performance with pōwhiri
- Practical activities, such as learning waiata, wood carving, flax weaving, kite making, art, craft and technology activities, waka drills, traditional games, re-enacting parts of historic events.
All school groups need to be pre-booked to make sure they receive the best educational experiences. Morning and afternoon sessions are available from Monday to Friday facilitated by a member of the Education Team. Due to popular demand, bookings need to be made well in advance to ensure preferred dates and times are available.Download our Child Protection Policy
